Dining Room Makeover on a Budget + DIY Plans Coming
For eleven years, my dining room has quietly been… fine. Not bad. Not broken. Not something I felt urgent about changing. Just fine. It was a mix of hand-me-downs, Facebook Marketplace finds, and pieces I had experimented on while learning different DIY techniques over the years. It told a story — just not one that felt like me anymore. And lately, that’s been hard to ignore.
When “Fine” Stops Feeling Like Home
I work from home full time, which means I don’t just live in this house — I experience it all day, every day.
Sometimes, when I need a reset between meetings or after staring at my computer too long, I’ll walk through the house just to clear my head.
And recently, I kept having the same thought when I passed the dining room:
This doesn’t feel like me anymore.
It felt heavy. A little outdated. Like it belonged to a version of my life that had already moved forward. And I think that’s something a lot of us don’t talk about.
Our homes evolve slowly, piece by piece, until one day you realize the space you’re in doesn’t reflect who you are now.
Why I Didn’t Just Start Over
This hasn’t been a full gut renovation — it’s been a slow, layered transformation.
I started with what I had:
- Repainting older furniture pieces using my fool-proof Pottery Barn driftwood finish (grab my free guide here!)
- Adding peel-and-stick wallpaper for texture
- Updating hardware and finishes
- Mixing budget-friendly finds with a few intentional upgrades.
If you missed that transformation, you can check it out here 👉

And while it definitely looks better than where it started…
I still felt like something was missing.
Pro Tip!
Remodeling as a Reflection of Life
I’ve always thought that the way we design our homes mirrors what’s going on in our lives.
When things feel chaotic, we declutter.
When we need calm, we soften colors and simplify.
When we’re ready for change, we start moving things around.
And lately, I’ve been craving something different.
Less clutter.
More light.
More intention.
Not just in my home — but in how everything feels.
The Moment It Shifted
This wasn’t a dramatic decision. There wasn’t a single “aha” moment.
It was more like a quiet realization that kept coming back until I finally listened to it.
The dining room didn’t need to be completely replaced.
It just needed to be reimagined.
And once I allowed myself to think about it that way, everything changed.
What I’m Planning (And Why I’m Excited About It)
Instead of a full renovation, I’m focusing on a few key changes that will completely shift how the space feels:
- Creating a more modern, clean focal point
- Adding functional storage without adding visual weight
- Refinishing pieces I already own instead of replacing them
- Bringing in lighter, more calming tones
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s creating a space that feels like it fits this season of life.
What’s Coming Next
This is the part I’m most excited about.
Because this isn’t just one project — it’s the start of a larger reset.
I’ll be sharing:
- The full budget dining room makeover
- How I built a DIY floating buffet without IKEA cabinets
- My updated Pottery Barn driftwood finish technique
- Before and after transformations
- What worked (and what didn’t)
And maybe most importantly…
What it actually looks like to update your home when you don’t have an unlimited budget or unlimited time.
A New Chapter - My Dining Room Makeover is Complete!
This project feels like more than just a dining room update.
It feels like a reset.
A shift toward something lighter, calmer, and more intentional.
And if you’ve been feeling that same pull in your own home — like something needs to change, even if you can’t quite explain why — this might be your sign to start.
Not perfectly.
Not all at once.
But somewhere.
